Stop Waiting Until You Get Older or Retire.
Later doesn’t always happen the way we imagine.
I hear so many people say they’ll do things “later,” after they retire, after life slows down, after they’re older.
But later isn’t promised. And even if it does come, it doesn’t always look the way we expect.
We often assume accidents, injuries, or illnesses only happen when we’re old. The truth is, getting older and reaching retirement age is never guaranteed. And even if we make it there, our future selves may face challenges that change the entire course of our lives.
It isn’t just about the possibility of death; countless life-altering realities can steal the version of “later” we imagine: unexpected accidents, chronic illness, disability, strokes, brain injuries, or mental health struggles that reshape a person’s identity.
Losing my dad and my sister far sooner than I ever imagined forced me to confront how fragile time truly is.
It made me understand that you can still be physically present but mentally gone because of trauma, illness, cognitive decline, or emotional wounds so deep they change who you are.
Watching someone you love become unrecognizable, even while they’re still alive, is its own kind of grief.
My dad had so many dreams and plans for his future. But life unraveled for him much earlier than anyone expected. He never got the chance to enjoy “later” or the retirement he worked so hard for.
And we, his children, never got to grow old alongside him the way we imagined.
To work an entire career only to end up disabled, depressed, and trapped inside your own body—it makes you rethink the whole idea of saving everything for the future.
What good are the things you set aside if the version of yourself you saved them for never arrives?
Of course, we all hope for long, healthy, joyful lives, for ourselves and for the people we love.
But hope isn’t a plan. Don’t wait to live.
Don’t postpone the things that matter to you. And don’t save every bit of joy for retirement.
Use what you have now. Create moments of happiness now.
Do the things that light you up now, because take it from me, later is never guaranteed.
