It’s time to evolve and reframe how you perceive a child-free person expressing their joy. This is a topic and lifestyle choice that far too many people think they have the right to insert themselves into, often with some wild responses and outright disrespect toward those who choose to live kid-free.

This piece is open to those who are already parents, those considering parenthood, and those who are child-free by choice. There are educational and informative insights here for all paths.

My content surrounding this subject exists to raise awareness around both lifestyle choices: parenthood and living child-free by choice. It is meant to be informative and educational, helping people better understand, value, and respect one another’s decisions about whether or not to have kids. The goal is simple: people deserve to make well-informed choices about parenthood, not decisions shaped by pressure, misinformation, or cultural conditioning.

This content also works to dispel common misconceptions surrounding both paths. I enjoy advocating for the kid-free-by-choice lifestyle because society consistently demonstrates an ignorant, uneducated, and often hostile misunderstanding of it. As a result, I will unapologetically emphasize the joys, fulfillment, and legitimacy of choosing to live kid-free.

Let me be clear about what that means. If you aren’t familiar with my rules for my creative spaces, feel free to check them out before you make a fool of yourself in the comments. If you feel compelled to comment something foolish, like, for example, “If you’re really happy, why do you need to say it?”, your ignorance will either be publicly corrected or removed entirely. That decision will depend on how I choose to handle it.

Listen, advocacy exists precisely because something is underrepresented or misrepresented. When you see kid-free-by-choice individuals speaking openly about their happiness, it is a true expression of their joys, certainly not an invitation for disrespect. It is representation and advocacy aimed at countering years of misconceptions. It tells people who have been misled that they should question false narratives and understand that choosing not to have children can be a deeply joyful, intentional, and fulfilling decision for many.

This is not hypothetical. It is people's lived experience.

I mean, imagine parents sharing joyful moments about their children and then getting responses such as, “If you were truly happy, you wouldn’t need to talk about your kids.” That would sound absurd, because it is. People share joy because they are happy. So, let’s stop the nonsense. Disrespecting those advocating for an underrepresented life choice does not make you insightful or superior. It simply exposes your lack of knowledge and awareness. And, to put it politely, it does not reflect well on you.

Five Foundational Points to Understand

Here are a few foundational points when it comes to being well-informed and educated on this topic:

  1. Both are valid and valuable lifestyle choices.

  2. These lifestyle choices are not a competition.

  3. Neither option is better than the other.

  4. Childless usually pertains to those who wish to have kids but are unable to have them for reasons outside their control.

  5. Child-free or kid-free refers to those who have made a calculated choice not to have kids. They have evaluated the pros and cons and determined that having kids is not for them. They don’t feel a void, lack, longing, or sadness over their decision. Their lives feel joyous, whole, complete, and full.
